As a child, Crooks was sent to a Victorian Workhouse when his family was plunged into poverty in London's East End. In spite of this impoverished start in life, or indeed because of it, Crooks grew to become a pioneer of the Labour movement, fighting for social justice and change. He became only the fourth ever Labour MP; the first ever Labour Mayor in London and a Privy Counsellor to King George V. Crooks fought tirelessly for the rights of the common man, even while overcoming great personal tragedy in his own life. 'Where there's a Will, there's a way' is set against the backdrop of the birth and rise of the British Labour Party, at the time of Britain's awakening social conscience when the seeds of the country's welfare state were sown.
